“I can’t believe this happened again!” says Gavin. “Did you get the license plate number?”

“Yes, we can trace it, but they might dump it,” says Nicholas.

“At least, we know some of his partners’ names.”

“We do?”

“Yes, there are other agents working at different angles,” says Gavin. “We’ll have to pool our data.”

“So, where to now?” asks Nicholas.

“Let’s get out of the city and I’ll have to make a few phone calls.”

Amanda turns around. “Hello, David. How are you feeling?”

“Better everyday.”

“I take it you’re here for the paternity test.”

“Of course. I take it Michael doesn’t intend to keep Lucas.”

“He doesn’t want to claim something that’s not his.”

“He’s not going to use it as an excuse to keep you by his side?”

“He doesn’t need an excuse, David. I don’t intend to walk away.”

“Still won’t give my proposal some consideration?”

“David, I will not marry you, regardless of whether or not you take Lucas.”

“If I take him, he’ll want you to come along. Will you be able to turn your back on him.”

“Unfortunately, I will have to.”

“And Michael will want restitution of all monies paid, I suppose?”

“I don’t think so. He’s not that greedy.”

“Of course not. Mr. Pure and Righteous. Tell me, is that why you like him?”

“One of the reasons.”

“It couldn’t be anything else,” laughs David.

“You’d be surprised, if you weren’t so jealous.”

“Jealous? Of him? You’ve got to be kidding me. I had enough of his moral righteousness rammed down my throat when I was a kid.”

“I think you’ve both been jealous of each other for different reasons.”

“You’re modeling the best of the Golde jewelry,” says Paul, adjusting his camera. “Look sophisticated.”

“I’d rather look sexy and seductive,” says Chloe.

“Another time, sweetheart,” says Paul.

“Like tonight?”

Paul pauses. “Let’s not go there.”

“I heard you just broke up with your girlfriend.”

“And I’ll bet Ashley told you that.”

“Isn’t it true?”

“Yes. But that’s irrelevant.”

“Irrelevant?” asks Chloe. “Isn’t that why you’re turning me down?”

Paul sighs. “Partly. I’m not about to jump into another relationship.”

“I’m not looking for a relationship. I think you just need a little fun without the emotional ties.”

“I’m not sure I’m ready for that, either,” says Paul.

“Yes, you are. Call me anytime.”

“So Mark is out?” asks Robert.

“Yes,” says Tom. “He’s taking over a downtown cafe, The Hot Spot.”

“What’s to become of this place after we’re all gone?” asks Robert.

“It’s something we’ll have to bring up at the next family meeting. It won’t be the same again with all the recent changes.”

“No,” says Robert. “And how are things with you and Lucy?”

“Blanche is still holding a grudge, and Lucy is trying to get her to change her attitude. She’s not going to move out until she feels Blanche is adjusted.”

“How likely is that?” asks Robert.

“I don’t know. We may need help from other quarters.”

“What other quarters?”

“Maybe Phillip.”
