“He’s sleeping now,” says Amanda. “I don’t know what we’re going to do.”

“It does seem very cruel to just walk in and remove him,” says Michael.

“Unfortunately, no one has decided to come forward and make a claim for him.”

“I know. I can’t help feeling sorry for him.” Michael chuckles. “It’s funny. As soon as the courts decided that he was not my son, I began to feel pity for him.”

“It’s because you felt anger at the situation that you did not allow yourself to feel anything else for him. But what he needs right now is not pity. He needs love.”

“I know. When I saw him crying in there, it tore my heart. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to be unwanted.”

“I can remember what it felt like to be rejected, but at least I still had a family,” says Amanda.

Michael looks at her steadily. “We could offer him a family.”

“What are you saying?” asks Amanda.

“Will you marry me?”

“I thought we agreed that we would not get married just to adopt Lucas.”

“I didn’t say that. I asked you if you would marry me?”

“For yourself?”

“For myself.”

“Are you sure?”

“Why so much hesitation?”

“Because I don’t want you to regret it,” says Amanda. “We’ve moved very fast and we said we wanted to take it slowly.”

“I believe I know a good thing when I see it. I’ve known it about us for a long time. I love you Amanda, and regardless of how short or long I’ve known you, that will never change. I know I want to be with you for the rest of my life.”

Tears threaten to flow from Amanda’s eyes. “Oh, Michael. I love you, too.”

“Is that a ‘yes’?”

“Of course, it’s a ‘yes’.”

“Hello,” says Nicholas. “I’m here to fix the phones. Mrs. Flint gave me her permission.”

Jensen lets Nicholas in. “Is there anything I can do to help?”

Nicholas looks at him in surprise.

“Mrs. Flint told me you were expected,” Jensen says.

“What did she tell you?” asks Nicholas.

“That you were investigating the new Mrs. Golde.”

“Is that all?”

“I did not ask questions. But I will help in any investigation against the new Mrs. Golde.”

Nicholas smiles. “Then be on the lookout for me.”

“So, you’re leaving,” says Blanche, watching Lucy pack.

“I figured there was nothing left for me to do here,” says Lucy.

“I guess it’s time I go home as well,” says Blanche.

“You have a home here,” says Lucy. “If not, you can move in with me.”

“I don’t take charity. I have my own place.”

“But you’ll be lonely,” says Lucy. “Besides, Lisa still needs you. That was the reason you came.”

“I’m beginning to feel like a fifth wheel.”

“Nonsense. If you feel that, it’s only within you. We do not feel like that about you.”

“You don’t feel angry with me?” asks Blanche.

“Why should I feel angry? You did what you thought best. It was only because you did not have all the facts that things went wrong.”

“I would rather that you were angry. Being so forgiving makes me feel all the more guilty.”

“Mama, you’ve got to learn that family stick by each other.”

“Unfortunately, our family has too many skeletons to accept each other readily.”
